Local Moving in Washington, DC

Careful, white-glove local moves across the District — flat written price, the same crew start to finish.

District High Quality Movers is a licensed Washington, DC moving company, and a local move here is rarely simple. A Capitol Hill row house has a winding staircase, a stoop, and no driveway; a Georgetown brownstone shares a curb with the whole block; a Logan Circle walk-up has a landing the sofa barely clears. We do this every day, and we plan for it.

You get our own uniformed W-2 movers, our own trucks, and a flat written price locked in before we lift a single box — no surprise add-ons after the truck is loaded.

  • Licensed & insured — US DOT/MC & DMV household-goods registration
  • Set-price quotes in writing, with nothing buried
  • Our own uniformed movers and trucks

Most DC moves come down to two problems: parking and stairs. Out-of-town outfits learn that the hard way. We pull an emergency no-parking permit to hold a curb spot for the truck, so the crew isn’t hauling your dresser an extra hundred feet from wherever they could squeeze in. And we send movers who have carried furniture up Petworth and Brookland staircases for years, so they read a tight turn before they commit to it.

Damon Ellis grew up around Northeast DC and built this company on three things: show up on time, handle everything like it’s fragile, and quote a price you can hold us to. Every job gets full moving blankets, shrink-wrap on upholstery, floor runners on hardwood, and door and bannister protection in the historic places where one scrape costs real money.

What a Local Move Costs

We bill local work two ways — hourly for smaller jobs, or a flat band for whole-home moves. Pads, dollies, and tools are always included.

Home size Typical flat price Crew
Studio $420 – $680 2 movers + truck
1-bedroom $700 – $1,150 2 movers + truck
2-bedroom $1,200 – $1,900 3 movers + truck
3-bedroom $2,050 – $3,150 3 movers + truck
4-bed house $2,900 – $4,400 3+ movers + truck

Prefer hourly? A 2-mover crew and truck runs $159/hr; a 3-mover crew runs $209/hr. A $129 deposit locks your date and comes off the total.

What’s Not Included

So the written price stays honest, a few things sit outside the base rate and we’ll flag them on the estimate before you sign:

  • Emergency no-parking permits from the DC parking authority (we file them; the District’s fee is passed through at cost)
  • Packing materials and labor if you’d like us to pack, quoted separately, full-pack from $440
  • Pianos, gun safes, and other specialty pieces, from $379
  • Long carries beyond what the permit reserves, or a building that won’t grant a freight-elevator window
Released-value coverage of $0.60/lb is standard on every move, with up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage per shipment and optional full-value protection. You’ll see the number before we start, and it won’t change because the day ran long.

Covered in your price

  • Full moving blankets, shrink-wrap, floor runners, and door and bannister protection

Questions we hear a lot

How do you handle parking on a narrow DC street?
We file an emergency no-parking permit with the District for the dates of your move, which reserves curb space directly in front of the door. The truck parks where it should, and your crew carries the short way instead of down the block. We handle the paperwork; the District’s permit fee is passed through at cost and shown on your estimate.
Can you get furniture up a tight Capitol Hill or Georgetown staircase?
Yes. Winding row-house stairs and stoops are routine for us. Our movers measure the turn, protect the bannister and walls, and when a piece truly won’t make the stairs we’ll tell you up front and plan the alternative rather than forcing it and gouging the plaster.
Is the quoted price really flat, or does it climb on moving day?
It’s flat. We give you a written price before the move and that’s what you pay, as long as the inventory and access we quoted are what we find. If something genuinely changes — you added rooms of furniture, or a permit got denied — we talk it through before any extra work, never after the fact.
Are you an actual moving company or a booking service?
We’re a real, fully licensed and insured DC moving company. We own six trucks, employ about fourteen full-time uniformed movers, and carry US DOT/MC authority plus household-goods registration across the DMV. Your move is done by our crew — not a third party we hand you off to.
